This motorized mutation appeared in the December 1977 issue of Hemmings Motor News. Half Corvette and half Continental Mark V, John Hurley Chevrolet displayed this 1977 “Markette” in their showroom. Our “Markette research” (I’m groaning too) didn’t turn up too much information, but this car appears to be a one-of-a-kind or almost one-of-a-kind custom.
The Cooper script above the driver’s side headlamp and passenger’s side taillamp signifies the car was built by Byron Cooper of Knoxville, Tennessee. The car was built from a fully equipped Corvette, it included a four-barrel 350-cu.in. V-8 engine, tilt-telescopic leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, Gymkhana suspension, automatic transmission, air conditioning, leather interior, wire wheels, vinyl top and the all-important stereo tape system with AM/FM radio. The car had a dove grey exterior with red trim and was listed in Hemmings for $19,800. For those of you wondering, that would be a little bit north of $77,000 today. Whatever happened to the Markette is anyone’s guess and we’d surely love to know.
