On Friday we’ve got five-time Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro dropping by for this month’s podcast.

tin tops sports cars f1 Emanuele Pirro ask your questions

After three years in touring cars with BMW Pirro spent 1988 as McLaren test driver, enjoying a front row seat during the team’s historic season with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. For 1989 he replaced a still-hurting Johnny Herbert at Benetton and spent the next two seasons with Scuderia Italia.

Switching his focus back to touring cars, he won the prestigious Macau race in ’91 and ’92 with BMW before joining Audi, where he would spend the rest of his career. Two Italian Superturismo Championships followed in ’94 and ’95 as well as the ’96 German Super Tourenwagen Cup. When Inglostadt moved into sports car racing at the end of the decade he was one of its leading lights. Two ALMS championships, five wins at Le Mans, three at Petit Le Mans and two at Sebring make himone of the most successful sports car drivers of all time.

Pirro’s long and varied career should give the team plenty to talk about so leave your questions in the comments below.

Bravo Emanuele compliments for your racing achievements !
Ferrari coming back at Le Mans will boost the endurance racing, how far are they ?
Years ago you won at the Monaco Historique F3 do you plan to repeat it?

Daryl McGrath, 26 March 2014 12:53

I read before that when Emanuele drove the Benetton for the first time, he thought there was an engine problem. It turned out it was simply the difference between the Honda V10 he was used to testing versus the Ford in the Benetton at that time. Back then the engine was the key difference in cars compared to now where all difference is in aero – assuming everyone gets on top of the current ‘powertrains!!’

My Q is: was the difference in the engines as huge as we were led to believe at the time and how did the seemingly very nimble Benetton chassis compare with the McLaren, which I understand had a relatively poor chassis which was masked by the sheer grunt of the Honda?

Martin McAllen, 26 March 2014 13:42

How long did it take you to acclimatise to racing in the dark and how did you prepare for the first time?

Avinash, 26 March 2014 16:28

What do you make of young Italian drivers? Since 2012, there hasnt been a Formula 1 driver from Italy on the grid. Do you think this will change in the future?

Tony Geran, 26 March 2014 16:36

Emanuele, you acted as a driver steward at a GP last year, can you give us some insights about what that role entails and whether the driver steward’s opinion is listened to? On a lighter note I read somewhere that you were one of the most travelled drivers while you tested for Honda in 1988, how did you manage the jetlag especially on the eastbound legs?

Paul Sainsbury, 26 March 2014 17:31

Can you please tell us Emanuele what you think of ‘double points’!?

Diego Ruiz, 26 March 2014 20:16

Greetings Mr. Pirro,
Please tell us about your scariest moment(s) in a racing car or in a particular race.
Cheers from Colombia

Rob Elwell, 26 March 2014 22:03

Hello Emanuele, was the McLaren MP4/4 ever actually developed much during the 1988 season, and what was your opinion of it’s actual chassis. Any Senna or Prost anecdotes?

Trent, 26 March 2014 23:57

How good was Alessandro Nannini? Could he have been champion?

Kazman, 27 March 2014 02:07

Bravo for a great driver. Can you give us some insight into Dr Ulrich. He seems like a great boss for drivers. What is your favorite story about the guy who heads Audi Motorsport.?

Mario Carneiro Neto, 27 March 2014 02:40

Given the sad state of F1, does Emanuele believe we will see Ferrari back at Le Mans any time soon? Would he consider working for them, if they did?

Thanks for the opportunity to ask him questions! I am a big fan, all the way from BRazil.

Grazie Emanuele!

Emanuele do you agree or disagree with the Audi engine designer Ulrich Baretsky that ‘Noise’ is wasted energy ? and how difficult did the lack of engine noise make the driving transition from R8 petrol to R10TDi.
