While we racing enthusiasts know of David Letterman – who recently announced his retirement from 33 years of late-night television – as co-owner of an ALMS and IndyCar team with Bobby Rahal, and we know of the 1971 running of the Indianapolis 500 mostly for the pace car crash into the photographer’s stand at the start of the race, there’s a more direct connection between the two, as Silodrome recently pointed out by featuring this video of the entire race: Letterman, who was born and raised in Indianapolis and went to work as a weatherman at Indianapolis television station WLWI, served as a corner reporter for the ABC coverage of the race and made a cameo (at about 13:50 into the video) interviewing Mario Andretti, who had crashed out of the race. As far as Letterman cameos, we’d say this one ranks right up there with Cabin Boy .
