Sure, the old rooming house on Los Angeles’s Main Street being demolished in this photo we came across over on the Huntington Digital Library looks rather dilapidated to begin with, but there may have been another reason for tearing it down: Just a few years prior to the December 1957 date of the photo, the entire district here – the oldest section of Los Angeles, apparently – was designated a state monument, which meant more tourist traffic, which meant increased demand for parking, which is why the whole row of buildings, back to the church, is nowadays a big parking lot. We can see that need for more parking already with few open parking spots in this photo. What do you see here?
