While the New York City Police Museum hasn’t been able to put on its annual car show since Hurricane Sandy flooded the museum’s permanent home in Lower Manhattan, museum staff have found not only a temporary home for the museum, but also another way to put its vintage NYPD cars on display later this month – on the floor of the New York International Auto Show.
Among the cars on display will be a 1958 Ford (notable as the first-ever four-door radio car used by the NYPD), a 1959 Ford, a 1961 Plymouth Fury, 1966 Chevrolet Biscayne, a classic 1973 Plymouth Fury I from the end of the classic green-white-black paint scheme, plus a Chevrolet Caprice and Dodge Diplomat utilized by the New York City Housing and Transit Police agencies, respectively, before both forces were merged into the NYPD.
The museum, which has been housed in the old 1st Precinct station house at 100 Old Slip since 2001, has temporarily moved to 45 Wall Street while addressing the water damage caused in 2012 by Hurricane Sandy. It is currently seeking donations to help defray the cost of making its permanent home usable again. While museum staff planned to hold its annual Antique Police Car Show last June at the permanent home, bad weather forced them to cancel and they weren’t able to reschedule.
The 114th New York International Auto Show runs April 18-27 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on the West Side of Manhattan. For more information on the museum, visit NYCPM.org, and for more information on the auto show, visit AutoShowNY.com.
