You can feel the past coursing through you, an unseen force of history, anytime you’re at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The ghosts of yesteryear live there, inhabit the property, from Ray Harroun to Louis Meyer to Jim Clark, and hundreds more. If you understand the sport, you can feel their presence. And next month, you can go yourself one better by seeing some of the legends in action again.

It happens as part of the forthcoming Brickyard Invitational, sanctioned by the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association. For the first time in history, race cars will be in action on the historic 2.5-mile oval and on its reconfigured road course on the same day. That brings us to the Brickyard’s folk heroes. They will be contesting the 2.43-mile road circuit in production-based vintage race cars as part of the Indy Legends Pro-Am race.

Here’s how it’s going to work. A number of Indy 500 veterans will be paired with amateur drivers for a 40-minute race on the road course, with the drivers for each team getting a 20-minute stint behind the wheel apiece. The cars will be 1967-1972 vintage Corvettes, Mustangs and Camaros with a displacement limit of 355 cubic inches, roughly paralleling FIA Group 6. The SVRA expects that 24 veterans of the 500 will be taking part. So far, the lineup includes three-time winner Bobby Unser, Al Unser Jr., 1992 rookie of the year Lyn St. James, Willy T. Ribbs, Geoff Brabham, Mark Dismore, Johnny Parsons Jr. and Alex Lloyd. The grand marshal, the immortal Parnelli Jones, will drive the pace car.

The Brickyard Invitational will take place June 6-8. For more information, visit SVRA.com.
